Overview of Yonkers

The city of Yonkers provides its residents with plenty of excitement and amenities, as it is the fourth largest city in the state of New York. Situated just outside New York City, Yonkers has plenty to offer those wanting to experience life in the big city.

Living in Yonkers, NY

Yonkers saw its first settlers in 1640, when a Dutch immigrant received a land grant and used it to construct a saw mill where the Hudson and Nepperhan Rivers met. Its unique name is a variation of the original Dutch words used to describe the area. This location, a major trade route, would result in Yonkers becoming an important trading hub in the region. Even though Yonkers was sparsely populated during the 1700s, it developed into a thriving community as businesses and settlers relocated there to take advantage of the waterways for trade.

During the 1800s, companies in Yonkers developed at a rapid pace. Cotton factories, stone mills, carpet manufacturers and the sugar industry made the city an easy place for residents to find work. As the community developed, it added modern amenities for its residents, including the world's first elevated mass transportation system.

Yonkers officially became a city in 1872, and was the first community in Westchester County to receive a city charter. It has remained prosperous since then and is currently home to nearly 200,000 residents. With its close proximity to NYC and a well-developed business community, Yonkers has become the ideal city for entrepreneurs and families.

Yonkers Work and Study

Yonkers is home to Westchester Community College, which aims to be more than the county's two-year junior college. The school, which has been a part of the community since 1946, educates 12,000 students. Pupils have more than 60 degree and certificate programs to choose from, and, with multiple sports teams, it's easy for students to get involved on campus. Students seeking a four-year university may find that Sarah Lawrence College is right for them. This liberal arts institution has a unique academic structure through which pupils can earn an undergraduate or graduate degree. With a small student population, Sarah Lawrence College is able to provide attendees with individual attention and assistance.

Just a few minutes from Yonkers is Concordia College, a school with a diverse student population and a commitment to academic excellence. With an exciting campus life, multiple degree programs and a fantastic location, Concordia offers pupils amenities not available at some other schools.

Yonkers isn't just full of college students - the city has a business district that is alive and well. Many residents are employed throughout Westchester County, and some of the area's largest employers include IBM, Westchester Medical Center, PepsiCo, Verizon, White Plains Hospital and Consolidated Edison.
