Overview of Apex

Apex is hailed as The Peak of Good Living. The city features a small-town environment filled with southern character and inviting residents. Nestled between the Neuse River and Cape Fear River in southwestern Wake County, the city is located just south of The Triangle - a nickname for the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill region. Apex gives residents an ideal opportunity to work, study, and play in these dynamic cities. Look for Apex apartments for rent, and join more than 38,000 residents who enjoy the southern charm of this North Carolina town.

Living in Apex, NC

Apex was settled in 1867 as the highest point, or “apex” on the Chatham Railroad between Jacksonville, Florida, and Richmond, Virginia. Despite slow growth rates in the succeeding decades, the city became a railroad station and shipping point for tar, turpentine and lumber because of the abundant pine forests nearby. The city faced more setbacks during the Depression-era, but came out with a bang in the 1950s when North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park generated significant residential development in Apex. The city has always maintained its small-town atmosphere, which is extremely important to local residents. Apex also features a historic district that has been beautifully maintained even through the city’s downtown restoration project.

Apex Work and Study

While there are no standard college opportunities located in Apex, central North Carolina is home to some of the finest universities in the country. The city of Durham, home to Duke University and North Carolina Central University, is 22 miles away. The prestigious University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is just 24 miles northwest of Apex. Residents here take advantage of the educational opportunities next door in Raleigh, including Meredith College, North Carolina State University, Peace College and Shaw University.

Because of the city’s location just south of The Triangle of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, Apex is home to many booming industries. The region is famed for research in many different fields including manufacturing and healthcare. Most residents here work in the traditional office environment, with 81 percent of residents holding management, sales and office jobs. Science, administration, education and social services encompass 38 percent of these positions, with an additional 16 percent of workers holding jobs in the manufacturing sector. Apex also has many blue collar positions to offer, as 7 percent of local residents hold positions in the service industry.
