Overview of Fourth Ward

Snuggled in the north quadrant of the intersection of Trade and Tryon, the tree-lined streets of Fourth Ward are home to some of the best residential areas in Uptown Charlotte. But it wasn't always that way. After a long history of construction and destruction, this neighborhood rose from the ashes with a dramatic revitalization that resulted in a mixture of beautiful Victorian homes, a thriving arts and entertainment district, and many new high-rise apartments and condominiums. Even though Fourth Ward is in the heart of Uptown, it still manages to feel like a small community with mature foliage and low traffic. From the brick sidewalks to the three acre Fourth Ward Park, the preservation and history of this area truly make it a relaxing neighborhood to come home to.

Fourth Ward Rental Market

It shouldn't come as a surprise that apartments in Uptown Charlotte are going to be a bit pricier than living in the suburbs. You get the excitement and conveniences of living in an urban setting, plus when you live in the Fourth Ward you get all the beauty and perks that the neighborhood offers. If your budget is on the lower and you’re living alone, studios in Fourth Ward start out around $890 while one-bedrooms are more in the $1000-$1500 range. 2-bedrooms are usually within the $1500-$2000, and if you’re looking for a lot of space and a top-floor apartment, you better get ready to dish out the big bucks.

Fourth Ward Dining & Entertainment

For all residents living in the wards of Uptown there is one main gathering point: The Square. Located at the intersection of Trade and Tryon, this area is packed with some of the best restaurants and bars that Charlotte has to offer. Choose from a plethora of different cuisines, do some window shopping at the small boutiques, or relax with a unique beer at the local brewery. Then head up Tyron from Trade Street and you’ll find some of the city’s favorite cultural attractions, including Discovery Place, the McColl Center for Visual Art, and the North Caroline Dance Theater. And the best part is that all of these activities are walkable from apartments in Uptown Charlotte. You heard us. No car required.

And for the outdoor enthusiasts, Fourth Ward has something for you to love as well. At the center of the neighborhood lies Fourth Ward Park, a three acre urban park and nature preserve that is comprised of walking trails, ornamental fountains, and a playground for children to enjoy. It’s the perfect place to get some exercise or simply unwind with a picnic among the trees.

Pet-Friendly Fourth Ward Apartments

Transitioning to an urban setting doesn't have to be hard on your pet. In fact, Fourth Ward has a vast selection of pet friendly apartments and tons of outdoor places to explore with your four-legged friend. A quick search of our available complexes will show that all of them have units in which both cats and dogs are welcome. If you don’t have a pet already, you’ll probably want to get one as an excuse to walk around and take in the gorgeous sights in the neighborhood. And in the times where you’re a bit too busy to go on the walk, Carolinas’ Critter Sitters and a host of other services will come to your home and take care of that for you.

Commuting From Fourth Ward

Many of the people who live Uptown also work Uptown. If this is the case, walking is probably the ideal option for getting where you want to go. There are also several bus lines throughout the area. There is an entrance to the light rail a few blocks away in the First Ward that will take you to the southern suburbs of the city, but you’ll have to check whether this would be a convenient way for you to get exactly where you need to go. If you are commuting during rush hour, I-77 from Uptown going south to I-485 is overloaded and there’s not a great alternative route. I-277 borders Fourth Ward to the north, and is the most convenient way to get to the other major thoroughfares that surround the Uptown area.

Schools & Education in Fourth Ward

There are two nearby options for Elementary Schools near the Fourth Ward: Irwin Academic Center and First Ward Visual & Performing Arts Elementary. Now we can’t speak from experience, but when it comes to test scores the students at Irwin test much higher than the students at First Ward. Students can also choose to attend Ashley Park for Elementary and Middle School, which serves grades PreK-8. West Charlotte High School is the home school for residents of Fourth Ward. However, if you are interested in enrolling your child in private school, there are several options both in and out of the Uptown area that are well-rated and close by.
