The South End neighborhood is a magical land located immediately south of Uptown where Charlotte’s industrial past meets its fashionable present. To give you some back story, the mills and warehouses that were all so essential to the success of Charlotte in its early days went into decline during the 1970s. Then in the 1990s, artists seeking cheap, large spaces swooped in and saved the day, transforming the area into the quirky, thriving community that it is today. Presently, the converted warehouses contain a diverse mix of restaurants, retail, and of course, apartments.
An assorted collection of professionals, artists, students, and businesses choose to make South End home. It’s a community that supports growth, places emphasis on local, and is bursting with activity and excitement. Plus its central location makes it extremely easy to go to Uptown or nearly anywhere in Charlotte.
Vintage is so in right now, and it just so happens to be what the South End specializes in. From contemporary mid-rises with modern furnishings to renovated warehouses with large windows and brick accents, South End will surely have housing that fits your needs AND your style. In fact, South End gains new residents to the neighborhood almost daily as new housing is continuously popping up for sale or lease.
To give you some idea of price range, one-bedrooms in this area can cost as low as $800 and as high as $1400. If you want to opt for more bedrooms and more space, two and three-bedroom South End apartments range anywhere from $1,200 to $2,300. Obviously those ranges are huge, so let us try to put it in perspective. Generally, apartments that are newer and located on or close to South Blvd are more expensive. The older the complex is or the further away it gets from the shops and stores that line South Blvd, the less expensive it is.
If one of your requirements in finding an apartment is to live is that it’s within walking distance of several places to eat, drink, and have a good time; South End might just be the neighborhood for you. With about 170 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops in South End alone, you can almost walk out of your door and trip over your dinner. Well, not really, but you know what we mean.
But maybe even more exciting than the fact that you can stuff your face all day long is that you can then burn off those cheeseburgers on a walking tour of the many neighborhood art galleries. South End is very supportive of its creative community, and hosts many events featuring the various talents of the locals including the bi-monthly Gallery Crawl and the South End / Dilworth Chili Cook Off. Likewise, locals give back to their community on South End Community Day by planting new trees and helping to clean the streets.
The northernmost end of the South End district is within reasonable walking distance of Uptown, and there’s also a light rail that runs through the neighborhood that will whisk you away to Uptown, so if you ever exhaust your massive amount of options within South End, you can always hit up new areas of the city.
Certainly not all, but most apartments in South End accept both dogs and cats. This is purrfect, because this neighborhood has all the amenities necessary to keep your pets happy and healthy. There are three animal hospitals and myriad options for pet boarding, sitting, walking, and grooming. And wait, we’ve save the best for last. Every year, you and your dog can participate in the Fido Fest; a canine festival featuring a 1 mile dog walk and a “pooch party” with costume contests and a doggy bouncy house. We know…we couldn’t believe it either.
South End just so happens to be one of the few neighborhoods that’s very well connected to several other parts of Charlotte by public transportation. The LYNX Blue light rail runs along South Blvd and takes passengers either farther south to Ballantyne or straight to the heart of Uptown. There are also several bus routes, including the 10 and 16 that serve the South End corridor, and the 19 and 36 that pass through and take passengers to other parts of the city. Although it only runs on weekends, the Charlotte Trolley is a charming way to travel from South End to Uptown. It runs on the same tracks as the LYNX trams, but it’s more of a thing to experience rather than a quick, convenient way to get around.
Aside from public transit, the neighborhood of South End is just well located. It’s close to Uptown, the airport, and it has easy access to several major highways. The main street running through the area is South Blvd, which connects to I-485 to the south and the I-277 freeway loop to the north.
South End Charlotte, NC is served by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district, which is known for having a host of great schools that test well compared to the national average. The home schools for students in this area include Dilworth Elementary School, Alexander Graham Middle School, and West Charlotte High School. There are also a host of magnet schools in the area, as well as myriad private options throughout the city of Charlotte. Many parents we’ve talked to say that they have been satisfied with the education their children have received in Charlotte public schools.
