You know the saying, “Build the Wal-Mart and they will come.” Maybe that’s a saying? We’re not sure. But that’s sort of how the Arboretum neighborhood came to exist.
Situated around two of Charlotte’s prominent thoroughfares (Providence Road & Highway 51), the neighborhood of Arboretum Charlotte takes its name from the mixed-use shopping center that it revolves around. Packed with apartments, offices, and tree-lined streets, this area is an impeccable mixture of urban amenities and small community vibes. This neighborhood is highly residential, which in part is because it is so easy to live here. The Arb, as the locals say, is anchored by a large Harris Teeter grocery store and a Wal-Mart, so residents in this area can basically run all their errands in one place. Plus it contains a medical center, a variety of restaurants and entertainment, and the area itself is gorgeous, safe, and easy to commute to and from.
Just like many areas of Charlotte, The Arboretum has seen extreme growth since the early 1990s. When it comes to apartments in The Arboretum, there are plentiful options ranging from spacious and older to luxurious and pricey. Families who want a plenty of space and conveniences like fireplaces and open land outside can find a 3-bedroom options starting around $1,100. While a young professional looking to rent a one-bedroom with fitness center and pool can find a place starting around $750. There’s really quite a variety of Arboretum apartments and townhouses, you just have to find the right fit for your needs!
We also thought it pertinent to mention the most popular subdivisions in the Arboretum for renters. This includes: Providence Plantation, Raintree, Piper Glen, Beverly Crest, Candlewyck, and Hembstead. There are several others that we could mention, but these are the ones you’ll see most frequently in your search for an apartment in Arboretum.
You would think that a giant shopping mall would mean that most of the business in Arboretum would be national chains, but somehow this neighborhood despite its Wal-Mart has maintained its share of local flavor. While there are certainly stores like Barnes & Noble and Bed, Bath & Beyond; there are also local eateries like Southern Gourmet, Natural Blendz, and a variety of other cuisine throughout the community. You can see a movie at the Regal Cinema Theater, enjoy a live comedy show at Over The Counter Improv, or take advantage of the nearby mall and indulge in some retail therapy. The Arb is also home to the Raintree Country Club and Cedarwood Country Club, so the golf enthusiasts are covered.
The Arboretum isn't much of a vacationer destination, but it is a heavy residential area. The good thing about the lack of tourists is that all your favorite locations won’t be swarming with out-of-towners who are taking photos of their food. And that’s always a plus.
Nearly all apartment complexes accept cats and most accept dogs, so finding an apartment that suites you and your animals needs should be a fairly easy task. If you’re looking for a townhome, that’s another story. You’ll have to speak directly with your landlord to know for sure, but generally townhomes are most hesitant to allow animals.
Keeping your furry friends happy and healthy is simple with all the pet amenities in this area. From the Matthews Animal Clinic to Camp Bow Wow pet sitting, all of the services you need can be provided by Arb locals. The only thing we wish there were more of were pet stores, however if you’re in a pinch and don’t always shop local, there is that huge department store nearby that has most everything you could need.
As we mentioned earlier, Arboretum is conveniently located close to two major thoroughfares, Route 16 and Highway 51. In rush hour traffic, a commute to Uptown takes about 30-minutes by car, but it’s only about 20 minutes in non-rush hour traffic. The Charlotte Area Transit System (otherwise known as CATS, but not to be confused with the animal…) runs a bus line through Arborteum that leads toward Uptown or further out into the suburbs. While most errands and restaurants within the neighborhood itself are walkable, you’ll most likely have to use your car to get to other parts of Charlotte.
The community is bordered by the South Park neighborhood to the northwest, Ballyntane to the southwest, and the town of Matthews to the east. We mention all this detail because if you work in any of the neighboring areas, getting an apartment in Arboretum Charlotte can be great way to save some money and enjoy an easy commute.
The Arboretum definitely wouldn't be such a popular area if it didn't have some of the best schools that Charlotte has to offer. Children grades K-5 attend either Elizabeth Lane Elementary or Providence Spring Elementary; both of which are high-rated and test above average. Grades 6-8 attend South Charlotte Middle School and then jump over to Providence High for the rest of their pre-college education. If you want a great education for your child the public options here are certainly impressive; however, we’d like to add that private options such as United Faith Christian Academy and Carmel Christian Schools are also located in this area.
