Overview of University City, Charlotte

University City (also known as U-City) refers to the neighborhood surrounding the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus. While this neighborhood has some semi-urban areas like the “downtown” area at the intersection of Tryon and W.T. Harris Blvd., most of U-City gives off a more suburban feel. Any by suburban we mean it’s a sprawled mixture of shopping, businesses, and residential areas. Aside from the university, this region features the Charlotte Motor Speedway, University Research Park, and the only IKEA in the Carolinas. University City is home to students, professionals, and families alike. Some people like the lower rent prices, some people like being close to the city but not in the middle of it. Whatever the reason, an ever increasing amount of people have been flocking to this neighborhood.

And like most other apartments in Charlotte, U-City apartments come with amenities like pools, covered parking, tennis courts, and more!

It should be mentioned that the area directly surrounding the University is mostly college students and can get a little rambunctious at times. However, most (if not all) or our properties are located in residential areas that do not come in contact with that area.

Not to leave out the big guys, this area also features a mix of retailers and offices, such as Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Best Buy, Michael's, TJ Maxx, and Ross.

University City is more well-known for its larger attractions. Obviously there’s the University of NC, which brings in all sorts of brilliant minds to work in the University Research Park which is one of the largest in the state. Other things that bring in residents and tourists alike include the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the PNC Music Pavilion, and the nearby Concord Mills mall. Whether you want to dance the days away with the summer concert series, cheer at a NASCAR race, or you want to shop until you drop, this area provides entertainment that people from all over the Carolina’s make a trip for.

Commuting From University City, Charlotte

University City is basically located along the edge of Charlotte in northeastern Mecklenburg County. Getting around within the neighborhood requires a car. There’s really no getting around that. But the good thing is that it’s well connected to other areas by the highways that run along and through it. The main connectors are I-85, NC-49 (University City Boulevard), and NC-24 (W.T. Harris Boulevard). I-485 and US-29 (N. Tryon Street) also pass through the area. Tryon Street will lead all the way into Uptown, but it's also easy to commute to Uptown via I-85 to I-77.

However, a lot of people in U-City work in the area as well. The University Research Park is host to many of Charlotte's growing businesses as well as major international corporations like IBM, McKesson, Allstate, and AREVA. A large portion of people in the area are employed by the large companies within the park, which is another draw to living in University City.

University City, Charlotte Schools & Education

University City is on the boundary between school districts and it’s sometimes hard to get a straight answer as to what your home school is. It will definitely depend on how far north you live. But when it comes to magnet schools, Nathaniel Alexander Elementary School, James Martin Middle School, Vance High School were created in order to accommodate all of the incoming employees to the University Research Park and their families. Additionally, North Carolina removed their cap for charter schools in 2012, so several new schools are in the planning stages in U-City.

If you’re interested in private options, Cannon School serves Pre-K through high school, is very highly recommended, and has dual accreditation.

If you are looking into higher education options, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Queens University of Charlotte, and Belmont Abbey College are located here, among others.
