Living in Cornelius, NC
Cornelius was founded in 1893 after a cotton weighing dispute between two local businessmen. Heavy rains made it difficult for the cotton firms in Davidson to conduct business, prompting farmers to build a cotton mill south of the city in the area that would become Cornelius.
Today, Cornelius is a very diverse community with ten public parks and a vibrant retail sector. Much of the town uses hydroelectric power generated in Lake Norman, as the lake's demography provides Cornelius with 70 miles of lakefront property. As most residents here are transplants, Cornelius embodies a friendly atmosphere of families who are eager to welcome others into the community. With a close proximity to other lakefront cities, Cornelius allows residents to easily take advantage of all of the business, educational and cultural opportunities in western North Carolina.
Cornelius Attractions and Special Events
The Lake Norman Miniature Golf Course is one of the town's most family-friendly attractions. The course was created to work with the natural landscape, which is reflected in the good mix of easy and challenging holes. Adults can visit Cornelius' House of Jazz to enjoy great Southern cooking, relaxing music and dancing. Local residents also participate in the Lake Norman Wine and Food Festival, which invites attendees to sample tastes from local restaurants and wineries.
