Overview of Greenville

Located just miles from the coast and near the halfway point between the borders of South Carolina and Virginia, Greenville is one of the busier metropolitan areas in North Carolina. Named to the list of Best Small Places for Business and Careers by Forbes in 2008 and 2010, it is no wonder that the 84,554 residents who call the city home enjoy a high standard of living.

Pitt County contains a significant amount of agricultural land, has a relatively mild climate and provides residents of the city with easy access to the ocean. People in the area tend to spend much of their time outdoors, and the metropolis was even dubbed the BMX "Pro Town USA" by ESPN.

Moving into the fast-growing city may be an excellent career choice or a decision that leads to a relaxing and fulfilling life, and Greenville apartments for rent are available to those who are looking to become a part of North Carolina culture.

Living in Greenville, NC

The city was founded in 1771 as Martinsborough, but by 1786 the name was changed to Greenesville (and later Greenville) in honor of the Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene. The presence of the Tar River within the town led to the emergence of a bustling commercial outpost in the area, as the metropolis soon became one of the major cotton export centers of the South.

The development of trade in Greenville continued into the 19th century, as it emerged as one of the leading centers of tobacco marketing and warehouses in the South. While it retained this image and character until the mid 1960s, it shortly thereafter emerged as a center for research and education.

Greenville Work and Study

Though much of the manufacturing and commerce has left the region, Greenville is now home to a number of major pharmaceutical companies - including DSM Pharmaceuticals, which employs more than 1,400 - and businesses such as Rubbermaid, NACCO Materials Handling Group, Grady-White Boats and ASMO. These firms, along with East Carolina University, provide residents with a number of employment opportunities.

East Carolina University is home to roughly 26,000 students, and a number of prominent schools associated with the institution provide people with a chance to pursue a medical career or one as a teacher. Since many of the students live in and around the city, finding Greenville apartments may be more difficult as the school year approaches.

One of the major business, research and education centers of North Carolina, Greenville attracts some of the greatest minds in the region.

Greenville Attractions and Special Events

The city has emerged as one of the leading centers for several industries, is a place where businesses are easy to start and has become one of the best places to raise a family in the region. Greenville's proximity to the ocean, numerous outdoor parks, and easy-going Southern attitude make finding Greenville apartments an enjoyable process for potential residents.

Live musical performances, several minor league sports teams, a widely recognized zoo and constant outdoor entertainment provide Greenville residents with a number of family-friendly activities to partake in during the warm seasons. Shopping centers and many outdoor dining establishments help to showcase the 30-year redevelopment process that the city went through, and its residents benefit from this previous expansion.
