Overview of Winston Salem

A city that has grown over time due to the inclusion and annexation of more land in surrounding counties, Winston-Salem is one of the largest metropolitan areas in North Carolina. Its 229,617 residents, according to the 2010 Census, enjoy a warm Southern climate in the "Twin City," a nickname given due to the hyphenation of its name.

Home to a vibrant art scene, a prominent tobacco manufacturing center and Wake Forest University, the city has a diverse mix of industry and culture and its residents reflect the various occupations that come from these industries. The region has a long and storied history, and many buildings are still standing from the Colonial Era, though prospective residents may want to look at other Winston-Salem apartments for rent.

Living in Winston-Salem, NC

The history of Salem predates that of Winston, as the former was founded in 1766 while the latter was officially named almost a century later in 1849. The two towns officially merged in 1913, creating the city of Winston-Salem.

The joint city grew out of two towns that were shaped by a thriving tobacco, textile and furniture trade in the area. This industrial history helped to influence the culture of the region, and supported population growth that allowed for an expansion of the business activity in Winston-Salem.

Once the city was hyphenated it attracted a number of businesses, and the famous Krispy Kreme doughnut shop was opened in the historic district in 1937. The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, which became famous for its Camel cigarettes, was also founded in the metropolis, due to the thriving tobacco trade in the region.

Winston-Salem Work and Study

The tobacco industry still employs a large number of people in the area, and the size of the city has also led to the creation of numerous local government jobs. The hospitals and medical centers associated with Wake Forest University, along with the school itself, employ many residents, with positions ranging from administrative to teaching roles.

Wake Forest University is one of the most prestigious schools in the country, and its more than 4,700 students enjoy a wide variety of courses, Division I athletics and years of tradition associated with the "Demon Deacons."

Rentals in Winston-Salem, NC and Cost of Living

The city has a significant amount of housing available to potential residents, and the relatively small population of students does not tend to intrude on young couples and families looking to move into the area.

The median gross rent for Winston-Salem is $670 a month, according to the 2010 Census, but this number can vary based on a number of factors.

Winston-Salem Attractions and Events

The football games that captivate the city for a half dozen or so Saturdays during the fall are often enjoyed against a sunny backdrop at BB&T Field at Groves Stadium, but those inclined to other activities have no shortage of alternatives. The metropolis is also known as the "City of the Arts," due to the fact that it had the first arts council in the U.S. There are numerous theatres, museums and galleries in the area that celebrate this legacy, which provides residents with a different cultural experience for warm summer afternoons.

The legacy left by the tobacco industry is not just one that celebrates cigarettes and chewing products, as the Reynolda Gardens host numerous events, provide shade during the hot summer months and allow residents to walk through the roughly four acres of outdoor facilities. Those with an eye for fashion will enjoy the Hanes Mall, which is the largest shopping center in North Carolina.
