Overview

Situated in the geographical center of North America, the Peace Garden State is one of the most rural states in the nation, with farms covering 90% of the land and almost half the population living in rural areas. The cities and towns of this peaceful, garden-rich state are small, but you can still find apartment rentals to meet your needs and budget.

What to Expect

It's no surprise that agriculture is the main player in North Dakota's economy. The state ranks first in the nation's production of spring and durum wheat, and other agricultural products include barley, rye, sunflowers, dry edible beans, honey, oats, flaxseed, sugar beets, hay, cattle, sheep and hogs. The state also provides coal, oil, natural gas, lignite, clay, sand and gravel. In recent years, manufacturing has been on the rise, especially the production of farm equipment and food products.

With 20 state parks and recreation areas, there are plenty of locales for enjoying the great outdoors. Favorite pastimes include hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. For those who enjoy sightseeing, there is no shortage of interesting attractions. Perhaps the most famous is the International Peace Garden near Dunseith. Also of note are the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site near Williston, Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site in Stanton, the State Capitol at Bismarck and the Badlands.

Those looking for apartments in North Dakota will find that it is a great place to live for a variety of reasons. North Dakota is the 12th-most affordable state to live in, with an overall cost of living at 7% below the national average, and housing costs—including houses and apartments—coming in at 12.5% below average. Crime rates consistently rank among the lowest in the nation. In fact, North Dakota ranks 50th (the lowest in the U.S.) for violent crimes.

Where to Explore

Fargo Apartments North Dakota's largest city with nearly 100,000 residents, Fargo is a railway hub as well as a financial and medical center for the region. The city was founded in 1871 as a stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad and was named for one of the owners of the Wells-Fargo Express. With one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, this city enjoys a thriving economy and job market. Does it get cold here? Well, yes. It gets down to about zero degrees in the dead of winter. But people simply crank up the heat in their apartments and wait for the mild temperatures the rest of the year; it rarely goes higher than 80 in summer and the autumn charms with spectacular foliage. The quality of life is excellent and extremely affordable, with an overall cost of living at a whopping 31% below the national average. That means apartments for rent are comparatively low-priced, with one-bedroom apartment rentals averaging $285-450 and two-bedroom apartments going for $475-620.

Bismarck Scenically located on the Missouri River, the capitol of North Dakota is a small city of 56,000 residents. Bismarck is the trade center for the region's agriculture, as well as a financial and telecommunications hub. Outdoor recreation is a popular pastime here, with residents enjoying hunting, fishing, boating and bird watching in the Missouri River Valley and adjacent prairies, wetlands and woods. Apartments for rent are affordable, starting in the $300 range for many one-bedroom apartments.
