Living in Watford City

Watford City was founded in 1913 during an economic boom that was linked to the first railroad passage of the Northern Land and Townsite Company, a division of the Great Northern Railway. In 1914, the company sold land lots to homeowners and businesses, prompting the true development of the city and the creation of its many neighborhoods. Later named in June of 1915 by Dr. Vaughan G. Morris after his hometown of Watford, Ontario, the town later added "City" to its name to differentiate itself from other similarly-named communities.

Today, the city offers rural attractions and modern amenities, supporting a population of around 3,285 residents. Watford is also surrounded by Lake Sakakawea, the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation and the Little Missouri National Grasslands. Most of the city's attractions are within a 13-mile radius. Watford City serves as a connection to rural and educational attractions such as the Maah-Daah-Hey Trail, the Lewis & Clark Golf Trail and the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

In town, residents renting apartments here enjoy an indoor pool as well as the ability to visit the Wild West Water Park. Other attractions include a municipal golf course featuring a new clubhouse and lounge, a health club, bed and breakfasts offering rooms for rent, museums, and business and shopping opportunities on a renovated Main Street.
