Overview of Williston

Williston, ND, is a booming place to rent an apartment due to the recent discovery of oil reserves within the state. Situated just 18 miles from the U.S.-Canadian border, the town serves as an important economic hub. When you're ready to rent an apartment in a neighborhood with a thriving community, growing job base and plenty of recreational opportunities, Williston is a great place for you to live and work.

Living in Williston

Williston was founded in 1887 by a member of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company and a railroad owner. The town was primarily used as a railroad stop and an area of trade with Canada. Agriculture also played a role in the community's early history.

Although the 2010 census estimated the city's population at about 14,000, local officials suspect the number of people residing in the community may actually be 20,000 to 30,000 due to all the workers in the area living in company housing while working on the newly discovered oil reserves. With all the people arriving in town, the community has responded by adding infrastructure and capacity to the schools as well as rebuilding and revitalizing the shops downtown and on Main Street.

The city has expanded its recreational opportunities for all the young, single workers in the area. You can try out one of the many local golf courses, including Eagle Ridge Golf Club, Williston Municipal Golf Course or The Links of North Dakota at Red Mike Resort. If you'd prefer a little more action, try water sports at Lake Sakakawea or the Williston Area Recreation Center, where you can play tennis, lift weights or run track in a climate-controlled indoor environment.

If you have found a place to rent and are looking for fun things to do in the neighborhood with your family, try the Old Armory, which is a historic building offering community theater productions. The James Memorial Art Center offers additional opportunities for interpretive art, exhibits and cultural events. The Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site is also a fun place to explore and is maintained by the National Park Service.

Transportation in the city is done primarily by car. If you need quick access to other areas of the state or region, the Sloulin Field International Airport is a small public airport situated about 2 miles north of the city limits. Amtrak operates a station in town and offers passenger rail to cities such as Chicago and Seattle.
