Just south of Cleveland along the Ohio-Erie canal, the city of Akron is a rapidly growing and desirable Ohio community. With its historic past, business district and large population, it is one of the economic centers in the state.
Those considering a move to this city will find lots of Akron apartments for rent to suit their needs.
Living in Akron, OH
Akron developed into a thriving city because of its strategic point along key transportation routes. The town was founded in 1825, just before the Erie Canal project began and the railroad came to the area. The town began to see an influx of new residents and officially became a city in 1836. With the formation of Summit County in 1840, Akron became the county seat.
Through the 1800s, the population continued to grow, and the city began providing its residents with modern amenities. A new health department, trolley system and police department helped the growing population remain safe and get around the city more quickly.
The city's ever-increasing population and ideal location helped it to attract plenty of large companies. It remains a thriving business center, and Akron's current population exceeds 198,000. Akron retains its historic appeal while still providing residents with modern amenities and services.
Akron Work and Study
The city is home to the University of Akron, which has been a local learning institution since 1870 when it was founded as Buchtel College. With its large and diverse population of more than 29,000 students, the school prides itself on its appreciation for other cultures. These thousands of students don't have trouble finding academic programs to suit them, as the school offers more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs. Strayer University also has a campus in Akron, and students can obtain degrees or certificates in accounting, business, criminal justice and several other programs.
Even though there are several universities in Akron, the city is much more than just a college town. It's a community with a thriving business district and a business-friendly attitude. Some of the largest employers in the city include Summa Health System, Akron General Health System, Summit County, Akron City School District and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
Rentals in Akron, OH, and Cost of Living
Those considering a move to Akron will find plenty of apartments available. Because of the diverse population in the city, rents vary quite a bit. While university students may prefer a smaller apartment with fewer amenities, middle aged professionals may desire more luxury in their rental properties. Akron apartments range anywhere from $500 to $1,250 per month, and the median gross monthly rental is $655, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Besides being able to find affordable rents, Akron residents will also find it easy to cut down on expenses by taking advantage of the local public transportation system. The local Metro RTA shuttles commuters throughout the county.
Akron Attractions and Special Events
Those seeking some cultural delights in the city can head straight to the Akron Art Museum. Since opening in 1922, this local museum has been showcasing fine art from around the world. Over time, it has expanded in size and collected more pieces of art so it is able to create the most exciting exhibits possible.
Fans of the performing arts can spend a day at the Akron Symphony, which has been bringing music to the community for more than 60 years. Aside from providing entertainment to the public, the symphony also educates interested residents about music. By making the performing arts accessible to the entire community, the Akron Symphony is a welcoming place to enjoy a concert or learn about music.
Those who want to escape the city for a day can head to the nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park. With more than 12,000 years of human occupation, the area is a historic gem, and little remains undeveloped. Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves some of the natural landscape and beauty for future generations to enjoy.
