Overview of Batavia

Head due west on Interstate 275 and you will find yourself in the homey Ohio township of Batavia. Named after its first settlers from Batavia, New York, this charming city is located in Clermont County which means "clear mountains and hills" in French. Living in Batavia, OH

The first settlers in the area were French immigrants from New York who were given land from the Virginia Military District for their service in the American Revolution. One of the first settlers in Batavia was George Ely who recorded the new village's plat in 1814, however the first cabin in the area was constructed by the city's first resident in 1797, Ezekial Dimmit.

Batavia became the county seat of government in 1824 and the community began to grow slowly. By the end of the 19th century, the town had more than 1,000 residents and the area became a township. At the time, the town had three newspapers, three churches, one bank, one carriage manufacturer and one shoe factory to call its own.

Today, the city boasts a branch of the University of Cincinnati and remains a well-respected, quiet community that many residents in southwestern Ohio love to call home.
