Head due west on Interstate 275 and you will find yourself in the homey Ohio township of Batavia. Named after its first settlers from Batavia, New York, this charming city is located in Clermont County which means "clear mountains and hills" in French. This green, lush community is one of the most scenic in the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area. Because of its warm, welcoming atmosphere, it makes sense that so many Ohio residents are finding great Batavia apartments for rent.
The first settlers in the area were French immigrants from New York who were given land from the Virginia Military District for their service in the American Revolution. One of the first settlers in Batavia was George Ely who recorded the new village's plat in 1814, however the first cabin in the area was constructed by the city's first resident in 1797, Ezekial Dimmit.
Batavia became the county seat of government in 1824 and the community began to grow slowly. By the end of the 19th century, the town had more than 1,000 residents and the area became a township. At the time, the town had three newspapers, three churches, one bank, one carriage manufacturer and one shoe factory to call its own.
Today, the city boasts a branch of the University of Cincinnati and remains a well-respected, quiet community that many residents in southwestern Ohio love to call home.
The most populated institution in the area by far is the University of Cincinnati's Batavia branch at Clermont College. Located on 91 acres in the center of Batavia Township, this college has been a mainstay in the community since 1972. The college offers more than 50 associate degrees and certificate programs with a wide range of subjects. This college also prides itself on giving back to the community through outreach and awareness programs. If you are a student looking for Batavia rentals near campus, make sure you secure your perfect apartment well before school starts to avoid any scheduling headaches.
Since Batavia is largely residential, many residents commute to nearby Cincinnati for work. According to the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, the largest employers in the area are Kroger Company, the University of Cincinnati and The Proctor & Gamble Company, reflecting the diversity of industry in the area.
Despite being so close to everything Cincinnati has to offer, the cost of living index in Batavia area is more than 10 points below the national average. According to information from city-data.com, the median gross rent in 2009 was a very affordable $631 per month. The average resident in this area also earns more than $2,000 more per year than an average Ohioan. With its affordable rent, attractive location and opportunity for job growth, Batavia is a great place for anyone in the Cincinnati area to live.
Batavia is home to multiple Underground Railroad sites, which is a great way for you and the family to learn from a chapter of American history. Batavia is also home to a dozen golf courses where you can master your swing at. The birthplace of former Civil War general and president Ulysses S. Grant, and three other prominent museums devoted to Civil War history including the Archorage, Ross-Gowdy House and Promont House museums are all located minutes from Batavia.
