Take a long look at Cleveland, because this city knows how to stay ahead of the game (as long as you're not talking about their unfortunate professional sports teams). Not long ago overlooked as an industrial Rust Belt metropolis, the Comeback City has undergone a dramatic revitalization in the past few decades. It's now considered a model of urban planning, a bastion of arts and entertainment, and you're welcome to be part of it. All you need is a Cleveland apartment.
Cleveland was named after General Moses Cleaveland back in 1796. It really started to take off, however, after the Ohio and Erie Canal opened in 1832. At that time it began to blossom as a commercial hub, growing into the country's fifth largest city. Cleveland's good fortune continued through the first half of the 20th century with manufacturing and economic prosperity. By the 1960s, things had taken a turn for the worse. Suburban flight and social unrest resulted in riots. A recession ensued and Cleveland fought hard to recover. By the turn of the 21st century, that battle had been won with dramatically successful redevelopment. These days, Cleveland is known as the "Comeback City" for good reasons.
Cleveland, if you aren't familiar, is split into Downtown, the East Side, and the West Side. Downtown is where you'll find Public Square, the heart of the city. Area neighborhoods such as the Warehouse District and the Theater District contain many of Cleveland's commercial enterprises, entertainment options, and residences. Cross to the East Side of the Cuyahoga River and you'll be close to many of the city's museums and arts institutions. On the West Side you'll be nearer to the market and the airport.
There are five major industries keeping Cleveland at the top of its game. Those are health, science & engineering, biotechnology, manufacturing, and education. Major firms operating in the city include Applied Industrial Technologies, Eaton, Sherwin-Williams, and Forest City Enterprises. The NASA Glenn Research Center is also here. The Cleveland Clinic holds title as the city's largest private employer.
If you're coming to Cleveland to learn, Case Western Reserve University is the most prestigious in town. In University Circle you'll also find the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Cleveland State University and Cuyahoga Community College are other options within the city.
Rents in Cleveland won't break the bank, and neither will general expenses. The city runs about ten percent cheaper than the rest of the country on average. Expect to pay around $660 a month for a two-bedroom Cleveland apartment. With its high vacancy rate, almost one-in-five rentals here are available at any given time. Unless that changes, you shouldn't feel any pressure to find a place to live.
Any way you slice it, Cleveland is full of fantastic attractions. The second largest performing arts center in the country, Playhouse Square Center, is in this city. The Cleveland Museum of Art is respected around the world, as is the Cleveland Orchestra-one of the "big five." For a more modern sound, visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The Great Lakes Science Center is a relatively recent addition to the city and also worth a visit. If watching sports is your thing, you can catch home games of the Cleveland Indians, the Cavaliers, and the Browns here. Certainly one of those teams is due to win a national championship soon.
Cleveland's list of significant annual events is too long to fit on one page, let alone in one paragraph. For a sense of what's in store for you however, here's a taste. In terms of cultural celebrations, check out the Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy, the Harvest Festival in Slavic Village, the Cleveland Asian Festival in Asia Town, or the St. Patrick's Day Parade Downtown. The Cleveland International Film Festival comes at the end of March, followed by inductions to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fashion Week Cleveland makes waves internationally and Cleveland Beer Week has the city raising its glasses in October. Cheers!
