Overview of Covington

Sharing the Kentucky-Ohio border near Cincinnati and the roaring Ohio River, the city of Covington is one of Kentucky's finest communities. With its close location to Interstates 71 and 275, many Covington apartments for rent are popular with commuters working in the city or in nearby Ohio. Despite its close location to a large metropolis, the cost of living in the area is more than 10 points below the national average, according to City-Data, making it a very affordable place to raise a family. The average age for a resident here is younger than 35, making it a youthful and exciting city with plenty of promise for the future.

Living in Covington, KY

The history of Covington stems back to just after the Revolutionary War, when President George Washington sent his friend Christopher Gist, to scope out the areas along the Ohio River. As European immigrants began coming to the area, many of them of German descent, the city began to grow and flourish along the riverfront. Because much of the shipping and transport of goods was done through waterways, the city of Covington became well-established as a port city. It continued to grow throughout the years, rising from a population of more than 700 in 1830 to the current-day population of more than 40,000, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Covington Attractions and Special Events

One of the biggest attractions in the area is the Newport Aquarium, one of the best ways to experience wildlife in an unexpected place like the Bluegrass State. The venue is home to exotic marine wildlife like jellyfish, coral reefs, sharks, penguins and stingrays. A family-friendly venue, the aquarium is also a popular space for local events and exciting dive shows.

One of the finest golf courses in the Ohio River Valley, the Twin Oaks Golf and Plantation Club, is home to some challenging and beautiful holes on a magnificent and scenic green space. Part of the community since 1927, residents and visitors from all over the area come to work on their swing here every year.
