Living in Elyria, OH
When the United States was a mere 40 years old, Elyria was founded by Massachusetts settlers. The settlers followed an Indian trail adjacent to a Lake Erie beach ridge. Founder, Heman Ely built a sawmill near one of the region’s waterfalls and used the lumber to build more homes. Once the village began to grow more, settlers learned to build bridges, stores and factories, and by 1852 there were 1,500 residents of the village. By the turn of the century, nearly 8,000 people resided in the town that built telephone lines to bring electricity and phone service to the area.
The town was bursting with tall buildings and a growing workforce. The Garford Manufacturing Company and Automobile Company helped the city prosper as the times changed. By 1921, Elyria was the first town that used water from Lake Erie and by the 1950s, downtown Elyria was a hub for commerce and entertainment. This was the time when Cascade Park opened, a cherished attraction in Elyria. The first mall opened in August 1967 called the Midway Mall and featured record stores, movie theaters, department stores, shoe stores and banks.
Today, Elyria’s rich history lives on in its many landmarks like the Elyria High School, Loomis Camera store and the Ruins at East Falls.
