Living in Findlay, OH

Jean Jacques Blanchard, the earliest known settler of Hancock County, came to the area in 1769, although Findlay was not founded until the War of 1812. It was named after Colonel James Findlay, who commanded a regiment under General William Hull.

The municipality's population spiked in 1886 when gas and oil were discovered in the area. This resulted in the city's population skyrocketing fourfold virtually overnight and laid the foundation for further growth.

Findlay resident John B. Cooke was responsible for the city's designation as Flag City, USA. In the 1960s, Cooke, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, spearheaded an initiative for every house in Findlay to fly the Stars and Stripes on Flag Day. Cooke organized the distribution of 14,000 flags in time for June 14, 1968. Findlay was officially declared Flag City, USA, in 1974.

U.S. Census Bureau statistics indicate that Findlay was home to more than 41,000 people in 2010. The city encompassed 19.13 square miles of land in 2010.
