The small community of Galloway got its name from a political leader and public servant named Samuel Galloway. He was born in Gettysburg, Penn., but moved to Ohio in 1819. By 1844, Galloway began his political career as Ohio’s Secretary of State, overseeing the public education system throughout the state. He spent six years in office and helped pass two major laws that were integral in the creation of Ohio's school system, which is still in place today. In 1854 he became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio. For a short time before his death in 1872, Galloway served as a judge advocate of Camp Chase, a military prison in Columbus. For all the strides he made to better Ohio and Galloway, his legacy lives on in the community.

The largest employers in the area include the State of Ohio, the Ohio State University, the federal government, Banc One Corporation, Limited Brands, Ohio Heath and Nationwide Insurance. Also, Columbus boasts several corporate headquarters including Consolidated Stores Corporation, Borden Inc., Ashland Chemical, Battelle Memorial Institute and Bob Evans Foods.
