Overview of Kent

Kent, Ohio, nicknamed "The Tree City," is situated along the Cuyahoga River and is midway between Akron and Cleveland. This town is known for its quiet neighborhoods and many affordable apartments for rent. In recent years, the downtown area of this community has grown, as has the adjacent campus of Kent State University, which is the pride of the town. If you are looking for a community with a focus on family, higher education and outdoor recreational opportunities, this is an ideal place for you to rent.

Living in Kent

Until 1798, the area now occupied by the community was settled by Native Americans. Settlers from the Connecticut and Pennsylvania areas were sold land in the area by the federal government. In the 1830s and 1840s, the town grew as the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal was developed. Soon thereafter, a railroad station was built. In 1867, the town was incorporated. The eponymous university was founded in 1910 and quickly grew. The area soon became known for manufacturing.

Today, the town has a population of approximately 29,000 people, although the population tends to fluctuate with the school year of the university. This progressive community is known for its high level of respect for education, political activism and social justice.

If you're young, single and professional, you'll find many different places in the community to explore. You can check out the Haymaker's Farmer's Market in the downtown area from May through October on Saturday mornings. After getting some fresh produce, head over to Fred Fuller Park along the Cuyahoga River for a picnic. From there, you can take in a show at the Kent Stage.

In addition to all the cultural opportunities, this town also offers many activities for sports enthusiasts. In the university neighborhood, you can watch NCAA Division I sports, including men's and women's basketball. Dix Stadium on campus also hosts many high school football games. The university's ice arena hosts competitions and has open skating hours when you can try out a triple axle for yourself.

To get around town, you can take the buses provided by the Portage Area Regional Transit Authority (PARTA). The PARTA system offers service throughout the town, including campus transit and links to nearby towns such as Tallmadge. State Route 59 is the major east-to-west thoroughfare while State Route 43 is the main north-to-south route through town.
