Marietta, Ohio, is located in the southeast region of the state, on the Ohio-West Virginia border. It is a city in Washington County with a population of approximately 14,000. Living in Marietta, OH

Marietta was established in 1788 by Revolutionary War veterans. The area appealed to them because of its ideal location at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers. The town grew rapidly and in 1797, the Muskingum Academy was founded. In 1835, it became Marietta College, and today the liberal arts school enrolls more than 1,400 students.

Much of Marietta's early beginnings are still preserved today. Residents enjoy going downtown for trolley tours or to peruse the quaint shops along miles of paved brick streets. Groups of citizens have joined together for several programs to better the community, including Walk Marietta, dedicated to making the city more walker-friendly, and ReStore Marietta, an initiative to revitalize downtown. Marietta's commerce draws more than 7,000 people into the city each day and 4,000 people live and work in the city, according to City-Data. The area has two hospitals, four colleges and one school district.

Marietta Attractions and Special Events

Residents in Marietta apartments for rent have many options for entertainment through the area's many colleges, theaters, galleries and restaurants. People with an interest in the theater attend performances at the Mid-Ohio Valley Players theater, which also offers junior and youth productions. To see a piece of history, residents visit several Underground Railroad sites in the area, including a former slave owning plantation that is preserved to its original condition, and the Historical Harmar District of Marietta, where the first African American was born in the Northwest Territory and where slaves traveled to freedom.
