Marion was founded during the War of 1812 when a spring was discovered in the area by Jacob Foos, a surveyor for General Harrison's company. Foos constructed a well and named it Jacob's Well, and the city was officially established in 1824.

There are many school facilities to meet the needs of all residents, including one large city school district, four county school districts and a Catholic school.

Marion has the nickname of the "World's Popcorn Capital," and the city hosts its annual Marion Popcorn Festival, held every year on the weekend after Labor Day. Another popular area attraction is the Marion Popcorn Museum.

For a taste of culture, people can head to the Palace Theatre, a 1920s Vaudeville theater with 1,431 seats, which recently underwent a full renovation and is known as one of the jewels of the cultural scene of Marion. Other notable area attractions include Mount Gilead State Park, Harding Home, Marion County Historical Society Museum, Harding Home and Tomb and Sawyer Ludwig Park.
