Montgomery County was created in 1803 and named after a hero of the American Revolution, Richard Montgomery. The county - and Moraine - have a rich history, including being home to Wilbur and Orville Wright, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Erma Bombeck and several famous entrepreneurs. The area flourished in the 19th century with the completion of the Miami and Erie Canal. It was heavily involved in the state's agricultural and industrial revolutions.
Today, the county has several large employers in the healthcare, manufacturing and retail industries. Many government employees work at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which is just 16 miles northeast of Moraine. For more than 50 years, Moraine's biggest employer was the GM Assembly Plant, originally Frigidaire. It closed in 2008, and was renamed "Progress Park." The industrial center is now welcoming a number of new companies into the location. Moraine residents enjoy close proximity to three area hospitals and several institutes of higher education. They also have access to more than 175 acres of park and several recreational centers.
