Located in the heart of the southeastern suburbs of Cleveland, North Olmsted is one of the fastest-growing communities in Cuyahoga County. A part of the country that prides itself on its hard-working spirit and fun-filled activities year round, it is no surprise that many northeastern Ohioans are allured by North Olmsted apartments for rent. With a population around 32,500, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, this is a great community for people in the Cleveland Metropolitan Area to raise a family, work, live and play.
Living in North Olmsted, OH
In the area's earliest days, North Olmsted was called Kingston, and by the early 1800s, it again changed its name to the township of Lenox. However, one of the earliest recognizable names in the city was Charles Hyde Olmsted, one of the city's original landowners who claimed the area as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. In the beginning of 1815, Olmsted sold plots to pioneer settlers and even gave 500 books to the city of Lenox if they agreed to change the city's name to Olmsted. Officials agreed, and the remaining 153 books are still on display today in the local library, showcasing the unique history of the city's founding.
The small town had its roots in agriculture with a collection of small farms along Butternut Ridge. Eventually a blacksmith shop, quarry, mill, iron smelter and pig farm turned Olmsted into a community primed to thrive well into the 20th century. After World War II, many soldiers returning from combat began looking to the areas outside of Cleveland for a place to live. Residential and commercial building in North Olmsted made the city grow so fast in the 1950s and 1960s that it was at one time the fastest-growing city in Ohio.
North Olmsted is a famous city of firsts. In 1931, the community adopted the first municipally-owned bus line after the failure of the Cleveland-Southwestern Railway. This city was also the first place where legislation was enacted to ban materials and goods manufactured under sweatshop conditions, illustrating the warm, good-natured spirit of the communities in northeastern Ohio.
North Olmsted Work and Study
Many students in the area go to Remington College's west Cleveland campus in North Olmsted because of its affordability and ideal location. This college offers associate and bachelor's degrees in a variety of fields, from nursing to graphic design. With small class sizes available during the day and evening, there are plenty of programs to develop the skills you will need in your chosen profession. If you are a student attending Remington or commuting to nearby Cleveland for classes, your search for North Olmsted apartments should begin well before your term starts to locate the right rental.
Two of the largest employers in the area are Moen Incorporated, a bathroom and kitchen faucet manufacturing company, and CommutAir, a regional airline chain that services routes throughout the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states. The community of northeastern Ohio has a history in manufacturing and industrial complexes, so it is no surprise that many of the residents here find work in these fields.
