In 1809, the Ohio legislature built the state’s second public university in the uninhabited woodlands of Butler County. The town of Oxford originally covered one square mile of land, and in 1810, construction began on Miami University. Classes began in 1824, and the town was officially incorporated six years later. The local economy has always been sustained by higher education, with a number of institutions opening and closing throughout the town’s history. Today, Oxford remains a vibrant college town and is home to more than 14,000 students.
