Overview of Sidney
Sidney, Ohio, is the seat of Shelby County, located in the western region of the state. It is strategically located between Dayton, Columbus, Toledo and Indianapolis, and has a population of approximately 21,000, according to the United States Census Bureau. Sidney was created from a parcel of land along the Great Miami River donated as the county seat. The area is fertile and was used for agriculture and as a hunting ground. Sidney was connected to many cities in the 1830s via the Miami-Erie Canal, and later, the East West rail and a North South rail expanded its reach. The rail is still in use today, and with the construction of Interstate 75, Sidney remains a hub for commerce.
Sidney residents have access to many opportunities for play and work. The city has nearly 400 acres of parks, including one park with a wooded reserve and areas for hiking, fishing and outdoor cookouts. The park system also has multiple baseball, softball and soccer complexes and a community swimming pool. Just north of Sidney is Lake Loramie State Park, which includes a 1,600 acre lake and 30 miles of shoreline. One of Sidney's most renowned employers is Airstream, which offers tours of its trailer manufacturing plant.
Sidney Attractions and Special Events
Sidney is home to many historic landmarks. The Big Four Bridge has been a part of the community for more than 75 years, and when the rail was at its prime, it served as a link from Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis. The GreatStone Castle in town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and conveys the opulence of the area during the 1890s. Downtown, Shelby County Courthouse, built in 1883, features a 170-foot tower constructed with galvanized iron and has four clocks.
Residents look forward to many annual Shelby County attractions such as the County Fair, the farmers market, the Hickory Hill Lakes three-day country concert and the Lost Land Corn Maze.
