Overview of Streetsboro
Streetsboro sits in Portage County in northeast Ohio and is known as the "Gateway to Progress." The city is located approximately 14 miles northeast of Akron and roughly 25 miles southeast of Cleveland. The land on which Streetsboro is located today was originally inhabited by the Seneca Indians. It was founded as a township in 1798 and was named in honor of Titus Street, the city's founder. The land was surveyed in 1822 by Ralph Cowles and Lemuel Punderson, and major roadways came to the area as early as 1827. The well-known Ohio Turnpike was officially opened in 1955 with Streetsboro being officially incorporated in 1968.
The city has established numerous city services since its incorporation, including a parks and a recreation board in 1969, which assumed the responsibilities of equipping, operating and maintaining playgrounds, gymnasiums, swimming pools and recreation centers.
