Overview of Toledo

Toledo, as history will tell you, is worth fighting over. This strip of land along Lake Erie actually brought Michigan and Ohio to arms ages ago. Thankfully, sabers were rattled but no lives lost. Today, securing a Toledo apartment should be much less dramatic. All you need to prepare for is easy living, reasonable rents, amazing architecture, and excellent local eats.

Living in Toledo

Although there were settlements in this part of the country prior, modern Toledo really began with the Miami and Erie Canal. At that time, area residents joined together to compete to become the canal's terminus. Ohio and Michigan battled over the land in the tame Toledo War of 1835-36. One sheriff got stabbed in the leg and that was that. Ohio got Toledo and Michigan got the Upper Peninsula. The town grew with the canal, evolving into a hub for railroads and industry. The Great Depression took a great toll on the city, but Toledo fought back. Today, Downtown is once again attracting residents with active redevelopment.

To get a sense of Toledo, start Downtown and check out the new restaurants and shops that have recently restored vibrancy to this city. Wander through the Old West End to ogle the Victorian mansions and take in the Toledo Museum of Art. To the north, you'll find Polish Village. The University of Toledo is located in Old Orchard.

Work & Study in Toledo

Toledo makes good work of its location along Lake Erie, handling coal, ore, cargo, and storage as part of its designation as a Foreign Trade Zone. It was once a center for automobile manufacturing, but that's declined in favor of green industries and innovation in glass making. Today, Libby Glass is a major player in town as are Owens Corning, and Owens Illinois.

If you're headed to Toledo for an education, the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University are both in this city. Other area higher education institutions include Davis College, Mercy College, and Lincoln College of Technology.

Cost of Living in Toledo

Living in Toledo won't cost you an arm and a leg. In general, expenses here stay at or below the national average. That includes rents as well. A two-bedroom Toledo apartment rents for just $595 a month. Part of the reason residential property stays so inexpensive is the high vacancy rate. More than 11 percent of rentals are available at any given time in Toledo.

Toledo Attractions & Entertainment

If you're looking for a day out in Toledo, start with the world-class Toledo Museum of Art. While you're there, check out the Glass Pavilion across the street. The Toledo Zoo holds its own against heavyweights like San Diego. They had the world's first hippoquarium. If a day at the track sounds more your speed, Raceway Park presents live horse racing on the weekends. The Toledo Mud Hens play AAA baseball at Fifth Third Field downtown, too. That venue was named best minor league ballpark in the country by Newsweek.

Toledo Special Events

The biggest events on the Toledo annual calendar are ethnic celebrations, such as the La Grange Polish Festival and the German American Festival. Labor Day weekend launches the annual RiverFest with food, music, fireworks, and more. The Maple Sugaring Festival in April commemorates the history of this tasty treat. You can also check out the Toledo Opera's February gala or the Black Swamp Arts Festival in September.
