Living in West Chester, OH

By nationality, the largest group of settlers that arrived in West Chester were German, followed by Irish and English. Most of the settlers that came to the region were working in the manufacturing industry. Many were merchants, blacksmiths, tanners and millers, as well as an abundance of farmers. Attracted by the land of West Chester because of its beauty and high-quality land, farmers were confident in the investment of property.

By March 1803, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act to separate Hamilton County with Butler County, which was named after Revolutionary War hero, General Richard Butler. Twenty years after that, the County Commissioners petitioned to split Liberty Township with a region called Union Township. To this day, no one is clear why the officials chose Union as the name. During this time, there were no roads and the trails weren’t suitable to be used as a primary means of transportation. After some time, the Miami Erie Canal was extended to the community, as well as the railroads.

The community was known as Union Township for more than 100 years until 2000 when the name was changed to West Chester.
