West Chester was formerly known as Union Township in Butler County in southwest Ohio. Residents have the unique opportunity to enjoy aspects of the community's history, culture and natural resources. By March 1803, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act to separate Hamilton County with Butler County, which was named after Revolutionary War hero, General Richard Butler. Twenty years after that, the County Commissioners petitioned to split Liberty Township with a region called Union Township. To this day, no one is clear why the officials chose Union as the name. During this time, there were no roads and the trails weren’t suitable to be used as a primary means of transportation. After some time, the Miami Erie Canal was extended to the community, as well as the railroads.
The community was known as Union Township for more than 100 years until 2000 when the name was changed to West Chester.
