Overview of Westerville

Located in the northeast cover of what is considered Ohio’s fastest growing region, Westerville is a city filled with natural beauty. More than 40 parks and recreational facilities are scattered around Westerville, including a state-of-the-art community recreation center that residents enjoy. The city is known for its quick response times from local fire, police and emergency departments, as average times are less than four minutes. It is also located in a prime spot where residents can easily access Columbus, the state capital, and the airport in about 10 minutes.

Westerville apartments for rent offer residents a high quality lifestyle. With a big city right around the corner, residents can easily access cultural, sporting and music events downtown. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population has maintained a steady growth in the past 20 years. In 1990, the population was roughly 31,000 and today more than 36,600 people call Westerville home.

Living in Westerville, OH

Dating back to 1806, Westerville’s first settlers came from Connecticut, which soon created an influx of more people. Among those settlers were New York travelers, the Westervelt Brothers who donated land to help the community build a school, which was named the Blendon Young Men’s Seminary. This addition had a ripple effect on the rest of the land. Soon the community had its own post office called Westerville, named in honor of the brothers that contributed to the town.

Although the school didn’t last long, it had a lasting effect on the community. By 1847, Westerville was rapidly growing and by 1858, the town officially incorporated. During the 1870s, Westerville turned into a much more modern town, with streetcars and a railroad that connected Westerville to Columbus. In 1909, Westerville became nationally known when the Anti-Saloon League moved to the town. Westerville had long been known for its anti-alcohol residents, and it was one of the first communities in Ohio to do so.

During the beginning of the 20th century, Kilgore Manufacturing Company became one of the towns most well known businesses. The company produced toy guns and employed more than 175 people during the 1920s. Throughout the early twentieth century, the town steadily grew, and in 1960 it officially became the city of Westerville.

Westerville Work and Study

Since Westerville is so close to Columbus, many residents travel to the city for employment opportunities. Westerville sits on the edge of Franklin County and Delaware County, which both have plenty of options for the workforce. For instance, in Delaware County the largest employers are manufacturing companies. Automobile coatings, copper products, plastics, insurance, automobile parts and education are among some of the most prevalent industries in the area. Delaware County is considered a net importer, which means they employ workers from all over Ohio.

Students living in apartments in Westerville have several opportunities for post secondary education. Otterbein University, Fortis College Columbus and Hondros College are all located within city limits of Westerville.

Westerville has a generally average cost of living. According to Best Places, the overall cost of living is only 2 points higher than the national average, while food is 8 points lower than the national average. Utilities are 2 points higher, which is partly due to the cold winters in Ohio.

According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the average cost of rentals in Westerville is $838.
