Overview of Worthington

Worthington, Ohio, is in the central part of the state, just 9 miles north of the state capital, Columbus. The city of approximately 14,000 people was first settled by pioneers from the east coast in 1803, and Worthington has a quaint, New England feel. People looking for Worthington apartments for rent will find a great place to raise kids with close proximity to all Columbus has to offer.

Living in Worthington, OH

Worthington was settled in 1803, the same year Ohio became a state, by several New England families from Connecticut and Massachusetts. They were led by pioneer businessman James Kilbourne, who modeled the village's layout after New England towns. In 1893, the electric streetcar connected Columbus and Worthington and the village grew in population and became a suburb of Columbus.

Today, residents commute to their jobs in Columbus, but many still call Worthington home for work and play. There are more than 1,200 small, regional national and international companies in Worthington, and the city is very focused on building its community. Since 2001, it has held a "Hi Neighbor" month that has gained international media attention. People of all ages enjoy more than 200 acres of parkland, classes and shows at the Peggy McConnell Arts Center and the city's sustainability efforts.

Worthington Attractions and Special Events

Worthington has several historic attractions. These include the Orange Johnson house, which is one of the oldest pioneer homes on its original foundation in Ohio, and Jeffers Mound, which is a surviving portion of a Hopewell Indian earthwork. The Rush Creek Village is also an attraction because of its homage to Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. This neighborhood was constructed in 1956 with organic architecture that fulfills residents' needs but also fits in with the natural landscape.

Worthington sports fans look forward to fall to cheer on The Ohio State Buckeyes and high school football teams. Residents of all walks of life enjoy Columbus's outdoor concerts, bars and restaurants and the many shows that come through the area.
