Broken Arrow received its name from the Creek Native American tribe who lived in the area until the early 19th century. When a branch line of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company extended just north of Muskogee in 1903, new residents moved to Broken Arrow to join the landowners who had already started to build up a community. Broken Arrow incorporated as a city later that year, causing the local agriculture- and coal-based economy to prosper even further.

Broken Arrow did not experience a rapid period of growth until the 1960s when the sleepy community acquired the amenities of a typical suburban city. The Broken Arrow Expressway connected the city with downtown Tulsa, generating new local industry and opportunities. Today, the city has a thriving commercial district and city leaders who are passionate about continuing the economic development in downtown Broken Arrow.

Broken Arrow Work and Study

Broken Arrow is home to a branch campus of Northeastern State University that, along with the two other campuses in Tahlequah and Muskogee, from the largest learning hub in northeastern Oklahoma. NSU Broken Arrow offers more than 30 majors within the colleges of business & technology, education, extended learning, liberal arts, optometry and science & health professions. The university boasts strong on-campus student life, many clubs and organizations, a Greek Life system and many opportunities to study abroad. Northeastern State University joins a number of educational opportunities located 15 miles away in the city of Tulsa.

For those seeking work, Broken Arrow has the third largest concentration of industries in Oklahoma after Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Many large and small businesses are located here and provide local job opportunities for the city’s residents. FlightSafety International is the biggest private employer in the area with more than 600 employees who help develop safety devices and training programs for the airline industry. Ice cream giant Blue Bell Creameries also has a production facility in Broken Arrow and is one of the city’s tastiest companies. Other top employers include Windstream Communications and KSS Fuels, which provide a number of jobs for the 73 percent of local workers who hold management, sales and office positions. Broken Arrow also has a thriving service industry that offers opportunities for 13 percent of residents.

Broken Arrow is home to many family-oriented attractions that provide endless entertainment for local residents. The Ray Harrell Nature Park features free walking trails that visitors can explore for a peaceful, serene experience. With some of the most beautiful landscapes in the city, the park has gained a reputation as a local must-see. The Safari’s Interactive Animal Sanctuary connects visitors to nature in a different fashion, bringing exotic animals from all over the world to the heart of Oklahoma. Other local favorites include the Blue Bell Ice Creamery, Haikey Creek Park and the Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum.

The streets of Broken Arrow also come alive with events throughout the year, including the SandDazzle Sand Castle Event on Revere Beach, Made in Oklahoma Craft Fair, Green Fest, and annual Rooster Days Festival, featuring carnival rides, a 5K run, live bands and an action-packed parade.
