Overview of Edmond

Nestled in the heart of Oklahoma, Edmond is known as the “Crown Jewel” of the state. This charming Midwestern city has helpful neighbors and a nostalgic downtown area that are both highly acclaimed throughout the state. Edmond’s motto hails the city as “A Great Place To Grow,” which shows the dedication and optimism of local residents. This family-friendly community has just less than 83,000 residents but somehow maintains the comforting environment of a smaller town. Look for Edmond apartments for rent, and find the most inviting community in Oklahoma.

Living in Edmond, OK

The area was first used in 1887 as a water and coaling station for steam engines along the Santa Fe Railway going from Arkansas City, Kansas, to Gainesville, Texas. The stop was named after Edmond Burdick, the line’s traveling freight agent. As the highest point in the county, Edmond allowed trains to easily accelerate downhill in either direction. Although it originally saw one passenger train and one freight train daily, Edmond quickly gained fame as a place to get good food along the railroad, which was a rarity at some other stops. The city was officially founded during the great Oklahoma land run of 1889 with land plated by the Seminole Town and Development Company on both sides of the railroad station. Today, Edmond is a lively town that invites new residents and visitors to join in on the local attractions. The first public schoolhouse in Oklahoma was located in Edmond, which is still commemorated by a historic site that is open to the public.

With 116 undergraduate majors and 55 graduate-level programs ranging from forensic science to accounting to jazz studies, UCO is a great option for students from all backgrounds. The university also holds the distinction of being the only university in the United States to be named an official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site after hosting the 2010 World Sitting Volleyball Championships right on campus. The University of Central Oklahoma is joined by Herbert W. Armstrong College, Oklahoma Christian University and others in offering the most diverse education in Oklahoma.

For those seeking work, Edmond is home to many small family businesses and larger, well-known companies. Top employers in the area include Adfitech, Cox Communications, American Bank, the City of Edmond, the Edmond Public School System, Jetta Products, Unit Parts and the University of Central Oklahoma. The wide range of opportunities available keeps residents working in town to fuel the local economy.  Seventy-five percent of people here work in management, sales and office positions with an additional 14 percent working in service occupations to support the city’s booming infrastructure.
