Overview of Lawton
The city of Lawton is located in southwest Oklahoma, along the major Interstate 44 roughly 90 miles northwest of bustling Oklahoma City. Lawton apartments for rent are easy to find. Lawton was founded on August 6, 1901, when the federal government opened the land of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache reservation for settlement. The Fort Sill Army post was constructed just north of Lawton in 1869, which contributed to the abolishment of hostility in the area from Indian tribes. Henry Lawton was the quartermaster at Fort Sill and is well-known for capturing Apache leader Geronimo and placing him in jail. Lawton city was named to pay tribute to Henry Lawton.
Today Lawton takes pride in its green community efforts and the artistic endeavors of its residents. As the county seat of Comanche County, Lawton thrives as a governmental center for the area.
