Living in Tigard, OR
Wilson Tigard established Tigardville in 1852 in the area then known as East Butte. He built the East Butte School, the Tigard Store, a meeting hall, a blacksmith shop and the Emanuel Evangelical Church to support the town’s rapidly growing population of new German settlers. In 1910, the Oregon Electric Railway led to the development of a Main Street area that brought Tigard into a new era of commercial growth.
The city was officially incorporated in 1961 as Tigard, after the name was changed in the early 20th century to distinguish it from the town of Wilsonville located further down the railroad. Today, Tigard has made a new commitment to “going green” with a Main Street improvement project aimed at creating safe, sustainable growth for the city.
