Living in Bensalem, PA

The name of Bensalem has long been a topic of discussion for residents of the town, with the title dating as far back as 1692. Provincial records show the name Salem was always associated with the township, and at some point between 1692 and 1701 the prefix was added. Some historians believe the name means “hill of peace” or “peaceful mount” and others believe it means “son of peace.”

In 1684, the town of Bensalem was divided among twelve original landowners, according to a map by Thomas Holme. However, township tax records of the time account for three of the twelve owners actually living on the land. During that year, Lawrence Growden and his son Joseph owned more than half of the land. Lawrence, a native of England had never lived in America, but Joseph came to Pennsylvania in 1682 with his wife and one of his daughters to plot out 10,000 acres of land.

Bensalem was the fourth township to join Bucks County, an area boasting many farms. Today, the agricultural roots of the area continue to thrive, yet Bensalem has developed a number of modern amenities as well.
