Butler is located in western Pennsylvania, approximately 29 miles north of Pittsburgh. The city is the seat of Butler County and is considered part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers to the Butler area were of Scottish or Irish descent, with German immigrants arriving to the area in 1802. The city was named to pay tribute to Major General Richard Butler, who was killed in 1791 during the Battle of Wabash. Butler was incorporated as a borough in 1816 and reached the status of a city in 1918.
