Coatesville, PA is a small town in Chester County, located roughly 44 miles west of Philadelphia. It has a population of approximately 13,000 and many historic buildings that line the picturesque Brandywine River. People looking for Coatesville apartments for rent will find a tight-knit community with a rich history.
Living in Coatesville, PA
Coatesville was inhabited as early as 1714, and the first settlement was an Indian village that was a trading center for the fur trapping industry. Moses Coates, the area's first postmaster, purchased land in the area in 1787, and the city began to grow. The earliest manufacturing plant was an iron mill. The area experienced dramatic change with the completion of a turnpike leading from Philadelphia to Lancaster, now known as U.S. Route 30. Land lining the road was developed. The city continued to witness substantial growth with the opening of Lukens, which became the nation's longest operating steel mill.
Today, Coatesville is the only city in Chester County. It is no longer the manufacturing giant it once was, but the city offers its residents two hospitals and is situated within 25 miles of several higher education institutions, including the University of Delaware and Universal Technical Institute of Pennsylvania.
Coatesville Attractions and Special Events
People looking for apartments for rent in Coatesville will find residences among several National Historic Landmark properties, including the Brandywine Mansion, which was built in the 1700s and was at one time owned by the city's founder, Moses Coates. Other historic landmarks include the Clock Tower Building, a four-story structure built in 1889, and Historical Highbridge, a 934-foot long bridge that was constructed in 1904 for the Pennsylvania Railroad.
When Coatesville residents want to go out in a larger city, they can travel east to take in all the urban attractions that Philadelphia has to offer.
