Living in Elizabethtown, PA
Elizabethtown's humble beginnings go back to 1730, when Thomas Harris purchased a tract of land in order to establish a trading post. The post became known as Bear Tavern, but it was purchased from Harris in 1753 by Barnabas and Elizabeth Hughes. The Hughes family named the area Elizabethtown in honor of Mrs. Hughes. As the town began to develop, local shops and schools were erected. The names of the city's streets - charming titles like Market Street, Rose Alley, Cherry Alley, Peach Alley and High Street - remain in use to this day today. Elizabethtown was incorporated as a borough in 1827 and has continued to grow well into the 21st century.
The borough is also home to Elizabethtown College, a private institution that enrolls about 1,900 students each year. The college is a major part of the local economy and brings Elizabethtown's median age to 32.3 years, making it a very young community.
