Overview of Hanover
Cradled on the Maryland-Pennsylvania border in the southeastern portion of the state, the city of Hanover has become a quaint and delightful community for many Pennsylvanians looking to raise a family. This charming borough has seen a recent increase in residents, with a 2011 estimated population of more than 15,000, according to information from the U.S. Census Bureau. With its high quality of life and low crime, it is easy to see why so many Pennsylvanians are finding great Hanover apartments for rent.
Living in Hanover, PA
Hanover's history began in 1727 when an Irish nobleman named John Digges purchased a 10,000-acre tract of land and a small community began to grow. However, Richard McAllister bought a large portion of the tract and the city was originally named after him. It wasn't until 1745 that Michael Tanner, McAllister's German-born friend, suggested the name be named after the German city of Hanover, and the name stuck.
The city had a long disagreement about whether or not it should be in Maryland or Pennsylvania, but after the famous Mason-Dixon duo surveyed the land the verdict came in, and the Keystone State became the winner. Today, the city is home to a close community of residents and the world-famous Snyder's of Hanover pretzel company.
Hanover Attractions and Special Events
Many Hanover residents like to spend their free time at Codorus State Park, a collection of rolling hills settled by Lake Marburg on more than 3,450 acres of land. Popular with sailboaters and motorboaters in the summer, fishers and hikers in the spring and fall and camping year round, the 26 miles of shoreline here are sure to be a gem in the community for years to come. The park even offers scuba diving along Sinsheim Cove and cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating and ice fishing in the winter.
