Living in Hatboro, PA

Despite its small size, Hatboro has played an important role in some of the most important chapters of American history. Hatboro's first resident, John Dawson - fittingly, a hatter from England - came to the area in 1715 and built a home that became known as the Crooked Billet Inn. The village was then called Billet, then later Hatborough in 1740. The small farming village consisted of 15 homes alongside a stage coach route between Philadelphia and New York, but education in the area has always been a priority.

However, Hatboro also played roles in the Revolutionary War, starting when George Washington and his officers ate dinner at the Crooked Billet Tavern in the summer of 1777, and then bought grain from a mill that is now known as the Old Mill Inn. Popular legend says that the Revolutionary War soldiers wore hats made in Hatboro.

The Revolutionary War Battle of Crooked Billet was fought in Hatboro on May 1, 1778. While British soldiers occupied Philadelphia, the militia in Hatboro was surprised by British troops and defeated in the battle. A battle monument can be found outside the Crooked Billet Elementary School.
