Overview of Lansdale

The borough of Lansdale is located in Montgomery County about 28 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The tiny town only comprises about 3 square miles, and is filled with outdoor recreation and cultural activities. The Lansdale Center for the Performing Arts is one of the town’s prized attractions, featuring a music hall and art gallery that holds events year round for the entire town to enjoy.

The sleepy town is quaint and comfortable, but residents can travel just a short time to get to anything they may need. Living in Lansdale, PA

The area known today as Lansdale was once primarily forests where the Lenni Lenape Indians settled. The area began to prosper in the 1850s when the North Pennsylvania Railroad was built through the town. Similar to many towns in that area across the country, after the railroad was built housing developments began to pop up and businesses were attracted to the area.

Later named after Philip Lansdale Fox, an official working on the railroad going through the town, historians say the name should have been called Jenkintown based on the traditional ways of naming regions of the time. The land surrounding the area’s train station was owned by the Jenkins family, but a town along the train line was already named after them. The village covered 269 acres of land before it became the Lansdale Borough.

In the early 20th century, Lansdale’s economy prospered as its agricultural industries provided many jobs and goods to the area. The town featured a canning factory, foundries, brickyards and a silk mill, as well as manufacturers of cigars, stoves, rope, iron, clothing, glue and piping.

Students looking to earn a two-year degree, or begin their education with an associate’s degree, attend Montgomery County Community College.
