Overview of Levittown
Levittown is a charming Pennsylvania community northeast of Philadelphia and close to Trenton, N.J. Families flock to this unincorporated area to raise children and start their own businesses nearby.
Families and couples seeking Levittown apartments for rent may find units big enough to suit their needs throughout the community.
Living in Levittown, PA
Levittown was founded after troops returned home from World War II and began to seek homes for their families in the suburbs. A company known as Levitt & Sons decided to take advantage of this need for suburban housing and create an affordable community for returning GIs outside Philadelphia in Lower Bucks County.
The community turned out to be a hit with veterans and their young families. A large portion of new residents came from Philadelphia and throughout Bucks County, Montgomery County, and Trenton. Business thrived for Levitt & Sons, and the community grew quickly.
When Levitt & Sons first began building Levittown, they intended for it to be officially incorporated. This would have made it one of the largest cities in Pennsylvania. But residents were fearful of high city taxes. Levittown instead became four separate municipalities - Bristol Township, Falls Township, Middletown Township and the Borough of Tullytown.
Today, Levittown is home to nearly 53,000 residents. It has grown exponentially since its early beginnings as a humble Philadelphia suburb, but it retains some of the special charm that drew new homebuyers there during the 1950s.
