Moon Township, PA is just 17 miles northwest of Pittsburgh and is the oldest township in Allegheny County. When Moon Township was founded in 1788, it had an area of 143 square miles. Before it was split into 55 smaller communities, it’s said that it took a person two days to travel by horseback across the township. What started as a farming community saw a major boom in industry in the early 1800s, when a gristmill, sawmill and fulling mill opened. Moon Township became an even more desirable place to live and work with the invention of the railroad.
The township’s population shot up in 1952, when the Greater Pittsburgh Airport (now Pittsburgh International Airport) opened. However, Moon Township faced a challenge to retaining residents when the airport relocated in the 1990s. But it bounced back, and is now home to many corporations, including FedEx Ground, GlaxoSmithKline, Eaton Electrical Group, Nova Chemicals, Inc. and Michael Baker Corporation, as well as Robert Morris University.

Moon Township offers a well-run park system with more than 600 acres of parks. The Moon Parks and Recreation System offers a host of athletic events, arts classes and children’s activities. Residents get in the competitive spirit by cheering on sports teams at Robert Morris University or spend their evenings attending shows and symposiums on campus.
If all of this isn’t enough, the township is just a short distance from Pittsburgh, which is home to several major league teams, popular nature and science museums, and plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs.
