Overview of Philadelphia

Welcome to the “City of brotherly love,” or as we like to call it, Philly. Sure it’s got a reputation for being a bit rough around the edges, but over the years Philadelphia has transformed into a hotspot for culture and opportunity. The recent rise in population can partially be attributed to Philadelphia’s economic hub, City Center. Many have migrated to take a job in this epicenter for Fortune 500 and information technology companies. Or maybe it’s the art that’s bringing people in. Philadelphia has more outdoor sculptures and murals than any other city in the United States, and the low cost of apartments for rent in Philadelphia is perfect for those trying to focus strictly on being creative. Or maybe it’s the food. The unique blend of backgrounds and ethnicities make for a plethora of authentic and experimental cuisine that will impress even the most discerning foodies. No matter what brought you to Philly—we’re glad you’re here. This bustling metropolis may be famous for its historical happenings and cheesesteaks, but soon you’ll know all the hidden gems that make Philadelphia a great place to live.

Philadelphia Apartments & Cost of Living

Considering that Philadelphia is the second largest city on the East Coast and the fifth most populated city in the US, it’s pretty darn affordable for its size. And if you compare the cost of rent in Philly to the nearby cities of Washington D.C., Boston, and New York City, Philadelphia apartments seem down-right cheap. The general rule of thumb is this: the further out you are from City Center, the cheaper the rent will be. One bedroom apartments in City Center average between $1,300 and $1,700, but that’s the price you pay to be near all the shops, restaurants, and clubs. At the far reaches of the city you’ll find one bedroom and studio apartments for about $600 a month, but depending on what you want from the neighborhood you live in, paying a bit more can get you much closer to certain amenities.

When searching for Philadelphia apartments, there are a few other costs you’ll want to keep in mind. Within the city limits you don’t need a car which eliminates the need for gas, upkeep, parking, and insurance—but you will need a public transit pass. Contrary to what some might say, it’s not always sunny in Philadelphia. In fact, it gets quite a lot of snow and most apartments for rent in Philadelphia use gas for heating. So if you have an apartment that doesn’t cover utilities in rent then you’ll definitely need to budget for high gas bills in the winter.

Entertainment, Vibe, & Culture of Philly

We mentioned it briefly earlier, but Philadelphia is widely known for its thriving arts and culture. Aside from all the local art and outdoor sculptures, there are many historic venues that are home to Philadelphia’s famous performing arts scene. The Academy of Music is the oldest operating opera house in The States and is home to the Pennsylvania Ballet. The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is home to the Philadelphia Orchestra (one of the top five orchestras in the US). There’s also Philadelphia Theatre Company, The Wilma Theatre, Walnut Street Theatre, and many more.

Plus when you’re searching for Philadelphia apartments, you’ll want to be close to great food and places to just hang out. While City Center has the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, and clubs, many neighborhoods have their own little pockets of entertainment. There are a ton of cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and local watering-holes to be found: you’ll have to do a lot of exploring to find your favorite pockets of the city.
