Neighborhood Information for Center City West, Philadelphia
Living in Center City West
Center City West apartments may be the hottest commodities in Philadelphia. This is ground zero for upscale shopping, downtown dining, and city culture. From Center City West you can walk to work, stroll to museums, or find yourself a quiet spot in glorious Fairmont Park. What’s not to like, you ask? Only the high rents! This is an affluent and attractive area, particularly around Rittenhouse Square.
Philadelphia was born over on the east side, alongside Old City’s markets. In contrast, Center City West started out residential. Both wealthy businesspeople and members of the working class built homes here. In the 1950s, commerce crept over to this half of downtown. Even with encroaching capitalism, however, Center City West apartments remain desirable. Only now they’re closer to boutiques, bars, and bistros.
Center City West Lifestyle and Entertainment
Center City West is known for its upscale shopping and museums. The Mutter Museum and the Franklin Institute are just two exhibition sites here, covering medical oddities and science respectively. You can check out the paintings in the Philadelphia Museum of Art or jog up the steps outside it like Stallone in “Rocky.” There are fancy restaurants around, hip bars to be found, and even indie rock shows at the First Unitarian Church. Shopping in Center City West tends to be ritzier, but you can also find basics like furniture, flowers, and—at Trader Joe’s—food.
If you want to spend some time in the sun, Center City West is just southeast of giant Fairmont Park. Rittenhouse Square is like an urban oasis. Schuylkill River Park may be new, but it’s already proving to be popular.
