Living in Germantown

If you score a Germantown apartment, you’ll find yourself living in one of Philadelphia’s most historical suburban areas. Everywhere you look in this neighborhood, you’ll see National Register of Historic Places plaques. George Washington, indeed, slept here. Germantown isn’t all history lessons, however. This tony area has been and remains a quiet, genteel place to raise a family. While it may seem at first glance to be all old money, Germantown actually serves as home to a wide swath of people of varying economic means.

Unsurprisingly, it was German settlers who first founded Germantown in the 1680s. These Quaker and Mennonite families began America’s anti-slavery movement that same decade. Much later, in 1832, American author Louisa May Alcott was born in Germantown. She went on to write the classic Little Women series of books.

Germantown Lifestyle and Entertainment

This part of Northwest Philadelphia isn’t the social center of the city, but it does keep residents satisfied. In Germantown you’ll find supermarkets, specialty stores, and an extensive selection of antiques, too. When you’re feeling peckish, one local favorite lunch spot is the Rib Crib. There are enough other restaurants around to suit most tastes, including ethnic places, pizza parlors, and a vegan and raw food restaurant. If you’re in the mood for a walk in the park, Germantown is well supplied with green space. Just to the west, the Wissahickon Valley section of Fairmount Park offers excellent hiking. You’ll also be close to the University of Pennsylvania’s Morris Arboretum.

Germantown Info and the Rental Market

Living options in Germantown range between apartments, Colonial-era homes, and large older homes that have been split into separate units. Germantown is primarily a middle class area, but there’s room for people earning less and more here. The average two-bedroom Germantown apartment rents for $1,265 a month.

SEPTA buses and regional rail trains help Germantown commuters cover the distance to Center City. This isn’t the closest neighborhood to the thick of things, so plan on your commute taking some time. If you’re driving, US Route 1 is the closest expressway.

Germantown Resources

The Joseph E. Coleman Northwest Regional Library of the Free Library of Philadelphia system is on west Chelten Avenue in Germantown. There’s a United States Post Office on Greene Street at West Hansberry Street. Germantown falls in City of Philadelphia City Council District 8.
