Named in honor of a former medical facility, Graduate Hospital is a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, live-work-play neighborhood in southwest Philadelphia. This diverse waterfront community on the Schuylkill River is also known as South of South and Southwest Center City as well as the hip monikers SoSo and G-Ho. Graduate Hospital is known for its tree-lined streets, colorful window boxes, stroller-filled sidewalks, and national landmarks.
The neighborhood is also known for its collection of shops, galleries, boutiques and beautiful old churches. The wide range of amenities within this easily walkable community create an atmosphere of sophisticated urban living that appeals to families, retirees, hipsters and young professionals.
The highly desirable Graduate Hospital community, comprised mainly of 19th and 20th century row homes, has several historic structures that have been remodeled into condominiums and multi-story apartment buildings. Interspersed with luxury homes, Graduate Hospital boasts a mix of affordable homes, apartments and condominiums for rent that average $1,250 per month. These studio, multi-bedroom and multi-story residences can include off-street parking, in-unit laundry facilities, elevators and door attendants.
Graduate Hospital has an eclectic mix of contemporary and old school dining and entertainment establishments; many are locally owned. Area residents can choose from a variety of ethnic restaurants, trendy gastropubs, and old-fashioned corner watering holes. South Street West is a hub of after-hours activity. The community is a short walking distance from the shops and restaurants of Rittenhouse Square and the Italian Market, the country’s oldest working outdoor market. Home to the acclaimed Philadelphia Orchestra, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is just a few blocks north of G-Ho.
You can also enjoy the outdoor activities found in several nearby urban green spaces and neighborhood parks, such as Fitler, Julian Abele and Marian Anderson parks. Schuylkill River Park features walking, jogging and bicycling paths as well as open expanses of lawn. The Christian Street YMCA offers a range of programs for children, teenagers and adults. The University of Pennsylvania complex, including the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, is just across the South Street Bridge. The Marian Anderson House is a historic home where the renowned opera singer lived for almost 20 years. The community is also a short distance from the city’s major sports arenas and cultural attractions.
Animal lovers will find numerous homes and apartments in Graduate Hospital Philadelphia that allow cats, small and large breed dogs. Julian Abele Park, Seger Park and the Schuylkill River Dog Run are great places to exercise your pets. The Dog Run features areas for large and small breeds as well as water fountains. The Graduate Hospital neighborhood is home to several pet stores and animal clinics as well.
The Lombard South Station is the Broad Street Line subway stop serving the Graduate Hospital neighborhood. The nearby South Street Bridge allows easy access to Interstates 76 and 95. While Broad Street is the major north-south corridor, Lombard and South Streets provide east-west travel across the community, which is just a 10-minute drive from downtown.
The Chester A. Arthur and Edwin M. Stanton schools, two K-8 public elementary schools, as well as the Universal Institute Charter School and Independence Charter School, which admit students based on a lottery, serve the Graduate Hospital community. Arthur sends students to Audenried Senior High while Stanton is a feeder school for South Philadelphia High. For the school that serves the home or apartment that you rent, contact the School District of Philadelphia.
