Living in Parkland
Parkland, up in Northwest Philadelphia, is a catchall name locals use to describe the area around Wissahickon Valley Park. Some of the neighborhoods in this part of town include Germantown, Chestnut Hill, West Mount Airy, Roxborough, and East Falls. On the whole, this part of Philly feels more suburban then other parts of the city. Some Parkland rentals—large old homes—have been standing strong on the hillsides here for hundreds of years. Others parts of the district are newer, with more developments from the post-war period. If you take a tour around Parkland apartments, you’ll see both 18th century farmhouses and modern complexes.
Parkland Lifestyle and Entertainment
Many Parkland neighborhoods have their own commercial districts with coffee shops, local restaurants, and retail stores. You’ll find bars and restaurants in East Falls, for example. Wissahickon Valley is part of the extensive Fairmount Park system. There’s also Morris Arboretum here if you’re looking for some educational entertainment outdoors.
Parkland Info and the Rental Market
You’ll find Tudor, Victorian and ranch single-family homes on large lots in Parkland, but you’ll find reasonably priced rowhouses, townhouses, and apartments as well. The average two-bedroom Roxborough apartment rents for $1,120 a month. Chestnut Hill places are pricier.
For commuters, train and bus lines run in and out of the city from near Parkland apartments. Going from east to west, you’ll come across stations on the Chestnut Hill East, Chestnut Hill West, and Norristown lines of the SEPTA commuter rail.
Parkland Resources
The Roxborough Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia system is on Ridge Avenue, the Chestnut Hill Branch is on Germantown Avenue, and there are other branches around as well. There are United States Post Offices in many Parkland neighborhood centers. Parkland falls in City of Philadelphia City Council districts 4 and 8. Chestnut Hill Hospital is on Germantown Avenue.
